Our standards

At Clarity Auto Care, we do cooling system service right. We use manufacturer-specified coolant and professional flush procedures to service the entire cooling system, not just drain and fill. Our certified techs provide complete system analysis with clear explanations and photos. No shortcuts, no generic coolant—just proper service to prevent expensive engine damage.

Why your cooling system matters

Your engine generates enough heat to destroy itself in minutes without proper cooling. The cooling system is your engine's life insurance—it keeps temperatures in the safe zone while you drive.

Modern engines run hotter and tighter than ever before to meet efficiency and emissions standards. This means there's less room for error. When the cooling system fails, engine damage happens fast and costs thousands to repair.

Your cooling system does more than prevent overheating—it also heats your cabin, helps the engine reach operating temperature quickly, and maintains precise temperatures for optimal performance.

Long story short: healthy cooling system = reliable engine for 200,000+ miles.

Neglect it, and you're looking at engine replacement.

Why System Service Beats Simple Top-Offs

Many people just add coolant when levels are low. But if your coolant is disappearing, there's always a leak somewhere. Adding more coolant without finding the problem means you'll be stranded with an overheated engine.

What affects your cooling system health:

  • Coolant condition: Old coolant becomes acidic and corrodes internal components
  • System pressure: Proper pressure prevents boiling and ensures circulation
  • Component function: Radiator, thermostat, water pump, and hoses must all work together
  • Air removal: Air pockets prevent proper circulation and cause hot spots

The cost of neglect:

  • Acidic coolant corrodes radiators, heater cores, and engine internals
  • Leaks that start small become major failures
  • Overheating warps cylinder heads and destroys engines
  • Thermostat failure causes poor fuel economy and emissions problems

Remember:

Your cooling system is under pressure and operates in extreme conditions. Regular maintenance prevents catastrophic failures that can destroy your engine in minutes.

Complete Cooling Service vs Drain and Fill

Not all cooling system service is the same. Professional system flushing removes contaminants and old coolant that simple drain and fill leaves behind.

Why Different Cars Need Different Approaches:

  • BMW and Mercedes use long-life coolants that can't be mixed with conventional formulas
  • Toyota and Honda require specific coolant formulations for aluminum engine protection
  • Audi and VW have complex bleeding procedures to remove air from the system
  • Ford and Nissan trucks often have auxiliary cooling systems that need separate service
  • Luxury vehicles may have multiple cooling circuits with different service requirements

Our complete cooling system service includes:

  • Professional system flush to remove old coolant and contaminants
  • Pressure testing to check for leaks in the system
  • Thermostat operation testing
  • Radiator cap and hose inspection
  • Proper air bleeding using manufacturer procedures
  • Refill with correct coolant type and concentration

At Clarity, we service your cooling system according to manufacturer specifications and identify any components that need attention before they cause problems.

Modern Coolant Types

Today's engines require specific coolant formulations designed for their materials and operating conditions.

Common Coolant Types:

  • Green (conventional): Traditional ethylene glycol, needs changing every 2 years
  • Orange (Dex-Cool): Extended life formula, typically 5 years or 150,000 miles
  • Pink/Blue (European): Specialized formulas for BMW, Mercedes, VW/Audi systems
  • Hybrid formulas: Combine conventional and extended life technologies

Mixing different coolant types can create gel-like substances that clog your cooling system and cause expensive damage. Using the wrong type can void warranties and corrode engine components.

At Clarity, we use exactly the coolant type specified by your vehicle's manufacturer.

Common Cooling System Problems:

  • Simple fixes: Low coolant, dirty radiator, bad radiator cap
  • Moderate repairs: Thermostat replacement, hose replacement, small leaks
  • Complex issues: Water pump failure, radiator replacement, head gasket problems

Most cooling problems give you signs before they cause engine damage.

When Do you need cooling system service?

Cooling systems should be serviced according to your manufacturer's schedule, typically every 3-5 years:

Schedule service soon if:

  • Coolant is due according to maintenance schedule
  • Coolant looks dirty or has particles floating in it
  • Sweet smell occasionally noticed when engine is hot
  • Temperature gauge runs higher than normal

Get service immediately if:

  • Overheating - pull over safely and turn off engine
  • Steam coming from under the hood
  • Coolant puddles under your parked car
  • Temperature warning light appears on dashboard

Remember:

Overheating can destroy an engine in minutes. Never ignore temperature warnings or continue driving an overheating vehicle.

Quality service at fair prices

I went to Clarity Auto Care for a 30-point inspection before making a car purchase on a Saturday afternoon. The service was great and efficient. Sergei and his team took the time to fully explain all the repairs that needed to be done. They provided a clear inspection report with pictures and answered all my questions! I highly recommend them and will certainly come back for repairs. Thanks, Sergei!

When I found Clarity via Yelp business leads, I was in a serious bind trying to find an available mechanic with an available replacement radiator for my 2013 Nissan in between my multiple jobs (all of which require driving). Huge thank you to Sergei at Clarity Auto Care for his thorough, prompt service and communication! As a car novice, I'm always nervous to try a new repair shop but Sergei's calm, confident demeanor made me feel more at ease. The front lobby/waiting area is surprisingly spacious and relaxing (not something typical or expected in my experience with auto repair shops). I also noted a Carfax care certificate on display in the lobby which gave me further peace of mind that this business is recognized for its quality of service. The estimate process was simple and included detailed notes as well as pictures. Before beginning the repairs, Sergei answered all questions without hesitation or annoyance (something I've experienced before at other places). After the repairs were completed, Sergei further demonstrated his abilities & attention to details with helpful notes about the car's overall performance and potential repair needs for the future. He spoke candidly with me about the car's long term performance given its age and without trying to upsell me unnecessarily. I'm so grateful to have found Clarity and Sergei and would definitely return! PS This is also located less than a 10 minute walk from Belmont Caltrain which makes for much easier transportation while your car is in the shop!
